The Broad River Water Authority (BRWA) is your “Home Town” water supplier. It is a new, non-profit, company founded in 1999, by local officials that had a vision for local control of their own water resources. The young company issued bonds and purchased the Duke Power Company’s Rutherford Water System in December of 2000. The water system includes a modern water plant located on the Broad River, the water source, one of the cleanest and most dependable in North Carolina. The distribution system serves the Towns of Ruth, Rutherfordton, and Spindale, and many areas of the county such as the Cliffside and Harris Communities and many other areas in between. 

The BRWA is an independent, nonprofit municipal corporation, formed under the laws of the State of North Carolina, and is overseen by a board of eight (8) directors; two (2) each appointed for three (3) year terms by the governing elected commissions from the Towns of Ruth, Rutherfordton and Spindale, and the County of Rutherford. The current Board members are listed on the right side of this page for your information. Meetings, which are always open to the public, are held monthly, usually on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:15 pm at the Rutherfordton Town Hall. Every meeting has an opportunity for any person to address the board on any matter of inquiry or concern. The Board sets policy, rates, adopts an annual budget and hires a General Manager to carry out policy, make recommendations, and administer the daily activities of the water system’s operation.

The Board of Directors main goals for your water system are:

• Provide water that is totally safe for human consumption, meeting or exceeding all US-EPA and NCDENR standards………..and also tastes good

• Provide top quality customer service that is responsive to all customer needs and inquiries

• Provide water to all un-served residents of Rutherford County who want service

• Expand the system as aggressively as financially possible to un-served areas

• Stabilized rates as much as feasible

• Consider any and all proposals that will enhance the future of the BRWA
