Why We Should Conserve

Water is a finite resource–the earth has all the water it will ever get. And while the earth’s surface is 70% covered by water only 2% can be treated for drinking.

We are already faced by long droughts and water shortages, but as the world’s population grows, the water crisis will only increase in severity. We need to change how we consume water now.

So, how can we conserve water?

This page features several tips and tricks as well as videos to help you understand ways you can save water in and around your home. And remember, conserving water will save you money.

Don't use your garbage disposal. Compost vegetable food waste instead of using a garbage disposal.
Turn off the water while brushing. You can save almost a gallon every time you brush.
Install a low-flow shower head. An inexpensive and easy solution. Five dollars, fives minutes, and a wrench.
Shorten your showers. Every minute saves water. Use a timer to help keep track.
Shower with a bucket. Capture water while it warms up. Use the water for the plants or flush a toilet.
Use displacement in toilet tank. A half-gallon milk jug filled with water in your tank will save with every flush.
Don't use a toilet as a trashcan. Put trash in the trash can. Flushing it is just a waste of water.
Repair leaky faucets and toilets. Small leaks account for the greatest water waste in homes.
Wash clothes and dishes with full loads. Only run your heavy-water-using appliances when at full capacity.
Give fishy water plants. When cleaning out fish tanks, give the nutrient-rich water to your plants.
Close the drain before filling. Warm up the cold water with hot as the tub fills up.
Use a watering cam. Directing water right where you need it results in less water wasted.
Water Grass less frequently. Watering deeply & less often encourages deep root growth and drought tolerance.
Upgrade older toilets. Install a new water efficient unit or retrofit your toilet with a dual-flush kit.
Use a container to wash produce. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a bowl instead of running water.
Put Water in a pitcher & chill. Keep a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator for drinking.
